How to fix it
How to use the Markdown preview
Use it to check right away how Markdown looks while writing a README, notes or a document draft.
- Type or paste Markdown in the left box (top on mobile).
- The result appears live on the right (below on mobile).
- Use the Copy Markdown button to copy the source to the clipboard.
Supported syntax
- Headings # to ######, bold **text**, italic *text*, strikethrough ~~text~~, inline code `code`
- Code blocks (wrapped in ```), blockquotes (>), horizontal rules (---)
- Ordered and unordered lists (nested one level), pipe tables
- Links [text](address) and images
- Put \ before a character to show the symbol as it is. Example: \*asterisks\*
Security and limits
- Raw HTML is never run or rendered. It is shown exactly as typed.
- Only http, https and mailto addresses can be opened as links, and they open in a new tab. Addresses such as javascript: or data: are not turned into links.
- Loading an image would send a request to an outside server, so images are not displayed. Only the description and address are shown.
- The input limit is 500,000 characters (string length); emoji and some other characters count as 2.
- Indented code blocks, code blocks and quotes inside lists, footnotes, task list checkboxes and HTML entities such as & are not supported and are shown as typed.
- Exporting to an HTML file is not provided.
Frequently asked questions
Is my input sent to a server?
No. Everything runs inside this browser, and your input is neither saved nor uploaded. It disappears when you reload.
What happens if I use HTML tags?
They are not interpreted as tags and are shown exactly as typed. No script or style runs, so it is safe.
Why are images not shown?
Loading a remote image tells the image server that you opened this page and passes on your IP address. To prevent that, images are not loaded; only the alt text and address are shown.
Why are relative paths and #anchor links not links?
The preview page has no document for a relative path to point to, so only absolute addresses (http, https, mailto) become links.
